Karen Lamb (Auris Payroll)

Karen Lamb wants to bring Auris Payroll to your business.

Do all business owners understand the nuances of employee payroll?

Probably not, but some see the inherent value, especially in a job market where some entrepreneurs lament the lack of talent available for hire.

“People are struggling today to find talent,” says Karen, who has been in the fast-paced world of payroll for a significant amount of time.

At Auris, Karen isn’t solely looking to switch as many employers over to her company as possible.

“We go a lot deeper than just running your payroll and paying your employees,” she says, a Siamese cat annoyingly brushing its tail against the nape of my neck as I pen these words.

You know, admittedly, I shouldn’t be trying to educate people on what payroll is, because I don’t know anything other than when I see green numbers injected into my bank account every two weeks, I’m satisfied, the dopamine rush automatic as I fantasize about the various ways to allocate my capital.

Okay, so employees appreciate a well-timed payroll, particularly in an era of instant gratification where one can have Venmo hit you with those cosmic green numbers in a matter of seconds.

For a small fee, of course.

But for employers, they’re paying out when you and I are captivated by the infusion of dollars into our accounts, and believe it or not, getting employee payroll figured out isn’t as easy as waving the omnipotent AI wand at it.

For reference, Karen once encountered a gentleman who had 55 employees, yet he didn’t know what a W-4 was.

I don’t either, bro, so don’t feel bad, but if you own a business, you probably should, I think.

“Hopefully you don’t get an audit because that is going to be a problem,” Karen insists, commenting on the importance of the aforementioned W-4.

Audits, tax evasion, financial malfeasance.

All scary terms that could keep a hypothetical business owner wallowing in agony, but Karen removes that strain by helping business owners navigate ominous language and payroll systems that reek of complexity.

“My goal is to make the business more efficient and have better solutions for their team, and ultimately make payroll a positive experience instead of something that they dread doing every one or two weeks,” she explains.

As mentioned, there are hurdles to overcome when it comes to payroll, most notably on the small business side of things where the internal infrastructure isn’t as developed.

In terms of when a business owner finally relents and dials Karen, that answer is fairly predictable.

“What drives someone to call me is that they’re not getting the service that they need,” she says.

Since payroll is always time sensitive, a bombarded entrepreneur doesn’t have the hours or the patience to wait for necessary answers.

Things like IRA deductions and child support garnishments shouldn’t be passed off to an admin team across the Atlantic, and it shouldn’t take 48 hours for a resolution, but in the payroll world, some of Karen’s competitors operate with the urgency of a sea turtle.

I mean, imagine a restaurant owner who has to spend happy hour stuck on hold while their call is passed off to 18 different account representatives, none of whom have the faintest idea of how that restaurant functions, or what it needs to be successful from a payroll standpoint.

Enter Karen and Auris, who have a soft spot for restauranters swimming against the current with nothing more than a charbroiled grill and irrepressible ambition.

“I definitely have an affinity for restaurant owners,” Karen affirms.

“They are all a little crazy. I think you have to be to sometimes work those late nights and deal with high turnover.”

For as much admiration and appreciation that Karen has for the culinary industry, she is equally pleased to service manufacturing plants who have had the same employees for 30 years and are often much more regimented than their service industry counterparts.

It should be noted also that regardless of arena, switching to Auris is seamless.

Sure, long ago, when paper ruled, trees drooled, and fax machines created millionaires, jumping ship from one payroll entity to the other could be laborious.

“You’re too young to know what a fax machine is, but back in the day, we would fax stacks of paper,” Karen tells me, and my brain shudders at the mere thought of an antiquated piece of machinery carrying so much responsibility.

But in 2026, all you need is the login info to your payroll system, and then Karen can go in and get you onboarded with Auris.

“We literally move everything over for them,” she notes.

“I typically just need a voided check.”

Should the switch to Auris occur in the middle of the year, Karen will also go back to the first of the year and do an audit to ensure that your books are compliant.

“We just had a huge client who we went back and discovered that everything wasn’t right,” Karen shares.

“They under-reported Social Security and the unemployment assessment. We brought them up to speed on what the old provider had done.”

Granted, Karen didn’t come bearing good news, but she did come with relevant information that otherwise could have been extremely detrimental to that specific client.

“Switching payroll can be scary for some people,” Karen admits, but once companies partner with Auris, relief is commonly felt.

“We bring more value. It’s not just payroll and taxes. Sometimes we are adding in scheduling, attendance, and onboarding.”

Adds Karen:

“That can bring a learning curve, but usually it’s a learning curve that they’re excited about because now they no longer have to track things on a piece of paper or do things manually.”

The proliferation of AI, coupled with Megan Fox starring as a voluptuous robot in a film that might just mirror reality one day, can leave some feeling intimidated by technology, but Karen and her team at Auris are here to assuage those concerns, as it relates to payroll, and train employers on the backend, if necessary.

“There is some apprehension at first, but usually we’re bringing more technology to the table,” Karen mentions.

“Often business owners have known for a long time that they have needed to do this, but they just haven’t had the support to do it, until now.”

In the next twelve months, Karen is focused on cultivating more partnerships with business owners on a local and national level.

Right now, she is working with a finance company on the east coast that has 40 locations, which should provide her the requisite cache to ingratiate Auris to other accounting firms, CPAs, and insurance brokers.

Says Karen:

“It’s really about diving in and building the partnerships out so that I can serve more people.” QS
