Spencer Mistelske (Turnkey Restoration)

Spencer Mistelske is the owner of Turnkey Restoration, a roofing company in Maple Grove.

From Cambridge, a small town roughly an hour from the Twin Cities, Spencer rode his dirtbike to school in the spring and summer, and then when the snow fell, he fired up his snowmobile to get to class.

“You can’t do that anymore,” he says with a laugh.

Adept at math and science, Spencer attended NDSU after high school.

He began his collegiate career studying electrical engineering, but that wasn’t for him so he switched to accounting.

“I hated that more,” he admits, which ultimately led to him earning a degree in business administration.

Upon graduating, Spencer got a job in Braham at an electrical co-op.

Around this time, he also shattered his leg in a dirtbike accident, but later Spencer moved to the Twin Cities and got a job at Coca-Cola.

Working for a massive entity like Coke provided stability for Spencer, but he always had entrepreneurial aspirations, so he founded Turnkey Restoration and began flipping houses.

“I would go to work during the day, and then I would stay up all night working on flips,” he says, a trend that continued for several years until the 2008 recession hit, forcing Spencer to rethink his approach.

With things in flux, Spencer and some friends dropped everything and moved to Atlanta to begin selling roofs.

“That’s how I got into roofing,” the Cambridge native says, and for the next couple years Turnkey Restoration operated out of Georgia until Spencer decided to return to Minnesota and begin selling roofing, siding, windows, decks, and gutters to homeowners in the Twin Cities.

“Pretty much everything in the exterior envelope, we can do,” Spencer adds.

Of note:

Turnkey Restoration is not just a name.

Spencer and his team also restore older homes in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

“Some of those older houses have lead abatement, so there will be framing and siding work that will have to be done in order to enhance the exterior of the home,” he explains.

This is where Turnkey Restoration is different from other roofing companies, because they will get into the framing of homes, which in many cases can add weeks onto a scope of work.

In the roofing industry, extended timelines can be considered undesirable because many roofers want to install a roof in one day and then leave, but Spencer believes an expedient approach does not properly service those Twin Cities homeowners.

“Most roofing contractors run from those types of projects [restorations], but we like the challenge,” he notes.

Again, where most roofing contractors prefer a one-day job that they can build and bill out, Turnkey Restoration is willing to be more diligent.

“Even some of our roofing jobs will be considered restoration, because we will start what we think is a simple re-roof, only to discover that there is some framing underneath that is rotted,” Spencer says.

“We are very blessed to have an amazing field supervisor that is on site for re-roofs. He will address all the rot issues with homeowners while the roofers are performing the work.”

This strategy of carefully and effectively handling exterior projects has led to innumerable referrals for Spencer and his staff.

In that sense, they are a word-of-mouth business that doesn’t rely on massive marketing campaigns or sending out an army of doorknockers to attract clients.

“I don’t despise doorknockers, but years ago, when I developed the business model, I thought there would be a better and easier way to generate revenue,” Spencer says.

Looking to establish a foundation that would keep leads constantly coming in, Spencer developed key relationships with insurance agents, CPAs, and many other professionals who regularly engage with homeowners.

At the same time, these lead-gen efforts would be for naught if Spencer didn’t also surround himself with quality people.

At Turnkey Restoration, the culture is vibrant.

“Our employees appreciate the family atmosphere that we have cultivated,” says Spencer, who has employed many of the same people for almost a decade, which is very uncommon in the roofing industry.

“We are a smaller company, and we care for people like they are family. People are not a number here.”

For reference, this year a longtime employee left Turnkey Restoration, but later conversations with that same employee have shown that the culture Spencer and his wife have cultivated is truly something special.

“The individual who left, he just feels like a number over there at his new company, and so again, that is where we are different because we value the people who work for us. They’re not just here to check a box or fill a role,” Spencer emphasizes.

2025 was a crazy year in roofing.

Some might even label it nightmarish as plenty of Twin Cities roofers struggled to survive, but at Turnkey Restoration, the future is bright, regardless of ancillary factors like changes in the economy or insurance policies, and that’s because their employees and clients will always come first.

“No matter what revenue number we get to, I want to make sure we have systems in place so that customer service stays top-notch,” says Spencer, whose phone is seemingly always on.

“Our office phone is linked to my wife and I’s direct lines, so if she doesn’t answer, then I will answer. People are often surprised that I am willing to answer the phone at 7 P.M., but I’m always ready to help our customers and make sure they’re taken care of.” QS
