Matt Djonne (Insights Accounting Services)

Accounting is something every business needs, but it can often be an afterthought to a harried business owner. When your financial records get disorganized, it causes major problems in your business.

That’s where Matt Djonne comes in. He founded Insights Accounting Services, which helps businesses manage their books.

Matt Djonne grew up in the rural town of Redwood Falls, Minnesota. During childhood, he found that he had a gift for numbers and logic. He liked solving problems where there was a clear right answer. That’s what led him to study accounting.

“Accounting was a pretty natural choice. I like numbers and the analytical side of it. It’s very logical, and there’s always a right answer,” Matt recalls.

His college studies began at Bemidji State University. He enjoyed a livelier atmosphere when he transferred to the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he finished his accounting degree.

As it turned out, most corporate accounting jobs were in the Twin Cities, so that’s where Matt headed after college. He started working at Carlson, a conglomerate that owned numerous businesses, including T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants and Radisson hotels.

During his time there, he developed skills in varied accounting situations. He worked his way up the ladder into accounting management. On his way up, he helped the different businesses under the Carlson umbrella keep their books in order.

After leaving Carlson, he managed accounting and inventory for a home services broker called Crew2. Then he moved on to an accounting management role at a logistics company, where he ran the day-to-day operations.

With more than 10 years of experience in the field, Matt gained a wide swath of accounting skills and could use them to help more businesses manage their finances. That’s when he moved on from being an employee to founding an accounting firm, Insights Accounting Services.

Insights Accounting Services strives to serve its clients and make their lives easier. Small business owners can be overwhelmed with the amount of roles they perform. Accounting is a complex area of the business, and Matt can take those tasks off their hands completely.

As Matt puts it, “For 70% of small businesses, the main thing they need is just to organize their bookkeeping. A lot of the issue is that people just don’t have time to do it. The systems are set up, but they’re not really followed. They know there’s more they need to do, but they’re not spending the time doing it. Just having somebody they can hand that task off to is really what a lot of small business owners need.”

His business is designed to scale with your company. Many small businesses need help with accounting but don’t have enough work or capital to hire a full-time accountant. That’s where Insights Accounting Services comes in. They will take on your accounting work, and they’ll keep up with your books as your business gets more complex.

“Flipping that switch from having no accountant to having a full-time accountant is a big financial undertaking for a lot of businesses. So we’ll bridge that gap until they’re ready to have someone in house full time – until they get to the point that they’re paying as much as it would cost to pay a full-time person,” Matt explains.

Matt’s favorite type of work involves cleaning up the books of a business whose accounting is in disarray. He’ll go through their statements and records to reconcile their books for past years. Once they’re organized, it’s a simple task to keep their books up to date. He passes it off to his team for consistent, reliable bookkeeping.

After the simple accounting is done, business finances tend to grow more complex and difficult to manage. There are nuances to accounting that a self-taught business owner won’t catch. It’s important to hire a knowledgeable accountant to give your business the opportunity to keep growing.

“If you’re wanting to grow your business, evaluate inefficiencies or have metrics to hold your employees to. You need to have that next level of reporting ability, making sure you’re getting that information timely enough that you can use it and make sure it’s accurate. That’s really what helps businesses get to the next level,” Matt clarifies.

Matt also offers fractional controller services for complex businesses that must report their financial statements. His experience in large corporations serves him well in this regard. He can handle all the responsibilities of a financial controller for businesses that don’t want to hire a full-time controller.

His business has been growing steadily since launch, to the point of continuing to hire additional employees. Matt plans to keep growing it organically, as he finds the right customers to serve. His goal is to continue to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction while scaling his firm to help more people over time.

“My goal is to build enough capacity that we can hire more people and scale the business organically. I’m not a ‘sales-at-all-cost’ kind of person. When I’m meeting with prospective clients, I want to make sure we’re a good fit, that we can provide the service they’re looking for, and that they share our values,” Matt elaborates.
